Diamonds and their Grading - Everything You Need to Know
If you are not an expert in the area of diamonds and diamond quality it can be extremely difficult to determine whether or not the engagement ring you are buying is a genuine or a fake. The Gemological Institute of America is the creator behind the international diamond grading system which has mastered a system to determine the accuracy of a diamond, which is known as the fours C’s.
Cut, clarity, colour and carat weight are the four C’s which are used to determine the quality of a diamond. The GIA also came up with the international grading system which gives a final measure of standard to any diamond piece of jewellery. Gemmologists’ working at the institute determine the quality and grade of a diamond by first weighing them to determine whether they are real or man made, they then examine their colour quality (the less evidence of colour the better) and their clarity under extreme microscopic vision to assess if there are any blemishes. Once the diamond has passed these three C’s it is then on to cut, which goes further than the simple shape of the diamond but includes the polish, angles, light and sparkle quality.
